State and federal law require an annual assessment of Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students, also know as English Language Learners or ELL’s. The State of Ohio uses the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessments (OELPA) Assessment, which will be administered to individual students and/or small groups of students between February 29 and April 22, 2016. The OELPA will assess English Language Learners in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are given a score in each area, as well as a total composite score. The scores are used to determine whether or not our students are making adequate progress in English language acquisition and to make level of service decisions for our students in the Hamilton City Schools English as Second Language Program.
More information about the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessments (OELPA) can be found at the Ohio Department of Education and English Language Proficiency Assessment for the 21st Century Consortium (ELPA 21) websites. Practice test items for the OELPA Assessments can be found at the American Institutes for Research Portal for Students and Families.
