Students are required to complete 1/2 credit of either Fine Arts, Foreign Language, Business OR Technology to fulfill the graduation requirements for a Hamilton High School diploma.

Additionally, students must complete 2 semesters of Fine Arts in grades 7 through 12.  This state requirement may result in a student earning a Hamilton High School diploma to complete 1 full credit of Fine Arts in grades 9 through 12.

Course Descriptions

During this basic survey course, a focus will be placed on understanding art through the basic elements and principles of design.  Students will build a visual vocabulary while experiencing a variety of art processes and materials.  They will also become familiar with important artists and art movements with an emphasis placed on the history of art.  Students can discover their own creativity as they increase their cultural literacy.

This course introduces students to past and present periods of art, design, and architecture in order to gain interest in further study, and for personal growth.  Content includes examining art forms and understanding how they relate to contemporary society.

Prerequisite: Successful completion and passing grade from Art I

Students will learn basic handbuilding and wheel throwing skills.  Both functional and sculptural pieces will be created.  Students will also be educated in the history of ceramics, glazing, and firing techniques.  The elements and principles of design as they relate to original ceramic work will be used to guide student’s creative expressions.

Prerequisite: Successful completion and passing grade from Ceramics I and appropriate application for entry to class. (This can be obtained from Mrs. Bell in Room 865 or from counselor)

Open to junior and senior students who are interested in building upon their previous knowledge of ceramics.  This course is geared to the student is motivated to undertake very ambitious work in clay and further their understanding of ceramic art as a means of artistic expression and possible pursuit of study in college or future profession.

Prerequisite: Students must OWN an operating digital camera.

This class provides a foundation for using digital cameras.  Students will learn the history of photography, the basics of successful composition, and how to manipulate images.  We will also study famous photographers who work in the field.  Students will use a mixture of Adobe Photoshop Elements and online photo editing software.

Prerequisite: Successful completion and passing of Art I and Digital Photography.

The primary objective of this course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of graphic design including illustration, typography, composition and the history of practice.  A key goal for all students is to learn to use Adobe Photoshop Elements to create images and to develop meaningful concepts by researching a subject, conceptualizing an idea and critiquing their final design.

Prerequisite: Successful completion and passing of Art I.

Students will investigate art in the round.  Stress will be placed on the use of the appropriate elements and principles of design as they apply to three-dimensional work.  Sculptural artists will be studied as well as famous sculpture in a historical context.  Although this course is primarily studio based, students will have written work including quizzes and a final exam.

Prerequisite: Successful completion and passing of Art I.

This course introduces the fundamental techniques of metals while exploring your own creative side.  Students taking this class are taking a specific art step further and should demonstrate a sincere interest in metals as an art form.  This particular class involves written and oral reports, homework assignments, quizzes/tests, and a final exam.  Metals is a time consuming art form so time outside of class will be mandatory.

Prerequisite: Successful completion and passing of Art I.

This course is a fast paced, challenging course for in-depth creative self-expression, using 2D materials in the studio areas of drawing, painting and various two dimensional works.  Students will also continue to develop skills for personal expression by exploring a variety of new processes and techniques.  Students taking this class are taking a specific art step further and should demonstrate a sincere interest in drawing and painting.  This particular class involves written and oral reports, homework assignments, quizzes/tests, and a final exam.

Prerequisite: Successful completion and passing of three art classes and appropriate application for entry to class. (This can be obtained from Mrs. Dornan in Room 856 or from counselor)

Open to senior students who are very serious about continuing their education in art at the college level.  Students will create an individual study plan to strengthen their skills in a variety of media.  Students will create a dynamic portfolio, which best showcases, their passion for the area of art they wish to pursue.  Students will research art careers, both university and art schools, and be surrounded in an environment of working artists of diverse ideas and interests.

Membership is open to all instrumental students based upon director recommendation and/or successful audition.  Throughout the course of the year, students will explore the various genres of music through performance.  This course includes participation in concert, marching and pep bands, and is required for students wishing to perform in jazz band.  Band includes rehearsals and performances outside of the scheduled school day that are mandatory for all students.  Performances include:  concerts, competitions, parades, football games, basketball games and other public performance opportunities at the discretion of the band director.  There are uniform and other personal costs associated with membership in the band.

Freshman Band 1 year / 1 credit Fee Required

Pre-requisite:  Teacher recommendation or successful audition

Participation in this mixed chorus furthers students’ vocal training and prepares them for choruses at Hamilton High School.  Students will perform in events deemed appropriate by the director.  Attendance at all performances is mandatory.  There are uniform and other personal costs associated with membership in the chorus.

Pre-requisite:  Recommendation of ninth grade chorus director or audition prior to sign up.                                                                                                                                      This is a large vocal ensemble open to all grade levels.  Students will perform a wide variety of choral music literature.  Registration is by permission of teacher.  Attendance is mandatory at all performances.  There are uniform and other personal costs associated with membership in the Concert Chorale.  Second semester is contingent on student progress and participation.

Pre-requisite:  Recommendation of ninth grade orchestra director or audition prior to sign up.

Students will perform a wide variety of orchestra music literature written for both string orchestra and full orchestra.  Attendance is mandatory at all performances.    There are uniform and other personal costs associated with membership in the Orchestra.

Freshman Orchestra 1 year / 1 credit Fee Required

Pre-requisite:  Teacher recommendation or successful audition

Participation in the orchestra furthers students’ instrumental training and prepares them for orchestra at Hamilton High School.  Students will perform in events deemed appropriate by the director.  Attendance is mandatory at all performances.  There are uniform and other personal costs associated with membership in the orchestra.

Pre-requisite:  Cadet Chorus and audition prior to sign up and a 5-day summer camp

This select show choir will perform to a variety of music enhanced by choreography.  They will represent the school throughout the Tri-County area.  Second semester is contingent upon student progress and participation.  In addition to daily class time rehearsals, evening rehearsals take place on Monday evenings (all year) and Thursday evenings (March through June).  Attendance is mandatory at all performances.  There are uniform and other personal costs associated with membership in Rhapsody in Blue.

1 semester / ½ credit                                                                   Fee Required

This course is limited to 10 students who are interested in basic piano keyboard skill development.  Priority is given to seniors without a fine arts credit and prospective music majors.  Limit of 2 semesters may be taken.  Students are required to purchase a workbook.
