About the School Board

The Board of Education of the Hamilton City School District (the Board) is a five member body politic and corporate, as defined by Section 3313.02, Ohio Revised Code. The Board serves as the taxing authority, contracting body, policy maker, and ensures that all other general laws of the State of Ohio are followed in the expenditure of the District’s tax dollars, and approves the annual appropriation resolution and tax budget.

Meetings are held at the Board of Education and Janet T. Baker Educational Training Center, 533 Dayton Street. Please call the Superintendent’s office at 868-4439 to confirm dates and times as they may change due to conflicts in dates.

The regular meetings of the Board of Education are usually held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:00 P.M. The meetings are held in the Administration Building and Training Center, 533 Dayton Street, Hamilton, Ohio. Please call (513) 887-5000 with any questions.

Larry Knapp
Larry KnappSuperintendent
Born and raised in Oberlin, Ohio, Larry attended Miami University for both his Bachelors and Masters in Education. He is in his 38th year of education and has served in the following positions: teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent, and business manager. Larry has previous experience as a superintendent.

He is married to Lisa, a former teacher, and they have five adult sons and three grandchildren. Being animal lovers, they also have three cats, three dogs, and 10 alpacas.

Tom Alf
Tom AlfBoard Member
Tom was born and raised in Hamilton. He is a 1967 graduate of Garfield Senior High School. He has received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Miami University. Tom taught at Roosevelt Junior High, Garfield Junior High, and Washington Junior High. He served as assistant principal and principal of Garfield Junior High and Hamilton High School. After thirty­two years of service to the Hamilton City Schools, Tom retired as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources. After retirement, he was principal of New Miami Middle/High School and an administrator for Cincinnati Lifeskills. Recently, Tom has been a support/substitute administrator in the Hamilton City Schools. He is currently servicing the same support/substitute administrator role for the Talawanda City Schools.

Tom is married to Deborah (Vaske) Alf. She is also a graduate of Garfield Senior High as well as a retired teacher/principal of the Hamilton City Schools. Their two daughters, Sarah and Katie, are graduates of the Hamilton City Schools. Sarah and her husband, Robert Burk, have one daughter. Robert and Sarah are career educators.

Steve Isgro
Steve IsgroPresident
Steve was born and raised in Hamilton, Ohio. He is a graduate of Miami University with an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice Studies.He is currently employed as an Investigator for the Butler County Prosecutor Michael Gmoser. He is retired from the Hamilton Police Department, with the rank of Lieutenant, Commander of the Investigation Bureau. He also worked for the Butler County Sheriff’s Office as an Investigative Specialist assigned to the Child Support Enforcement Agency.
Steve is a graduate of the Police Executive Leadership College XXVII. He has severed on the Board of Directors for Transitional Living Inc. and has served as Treasurer, Vice President and President.

Steve was active in the Hamilton Welcomes the Holidays Committee as Santa Claus.

Served as an Instructor and Academy Commander for the Ohio Peace Officer Basic Training Academy.

Steve is married to Judy Yeakle Isgro and has two children and three grandchildren.

Scott Kruger
Scott KrugerBoard Member
Scott was born and raised in Hamilton, Ohio and graduated Valedictorian of Hamilton High School in 1997. He was enrolled in the Honors Program at The Ohio State University where he graduated Cum Laude in 2001. Scott then graduated from Northern Kentucky University Chase Law School in 2005, before entering private practice. He is the chairperson for the Young Lawyers Committee of the Butler County Bar Association and a volunteer for Hand Me Down Dobes, Inc., a Doberman Pinscher Rescue group.

Laurin Sprague
Laurin SpragueBoard Member
Originally from Lima, Ohio, Laurin began his teaching career in the Hamilton Schools in 1983. He received his Bachelor’s in Music Education and Masters in Educational Leadership from Miami University. He also earned a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Dayton. Laurin’s educational career in Hamilton spanned over thirty years as a teacher, principal and district administrator over the Fine Arts program.

Laurin is active in the Hamilton community as he serves on the Butler Philharmonic Orchestra Board, Co-Chairs the Hamilton 4th of July Committee and is a member of Hamilton Community Foundation Scholarship Committee. He is also an active member and Choir Director at Hamilton First Baptist Church.

Laurin’s wife, Lisa, is a retired Hamilton teacher. He has three sons, Andrew, Alex and Alexander, who graduated with honors from Hamilton High School.

Rob Weigel
Rob WeigelVice President
Rob was born and raised in Hamilton, Ohio and graduated from Hamilton High School in 2003. He then went on to graduate from Wright State University and the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. After graduation Rob began working for his father at Weigel Funeral Home where he became the fourth generation in his family to be licensed in funeral service.

Rob is embracing Hamilton’s revitalization by living downtown and being an active member of the community. He is currently a member of Hamilton Rotary Club and also serves on several boards including Partners in Prime and The Greater Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. Involvement in these organizations gives Rob a chance to give back to the community that he calls home.
